Accessibility Statement: In & Out-O-Meter

Accessibility for educational games is a work in progress across the industry. We continually seek solutions to make our products fully accessible, and we strive to adhere to established standards for accessibility and usability on each new project. Some of our older products may not be accessible in all areas and have not been optimized for current accessibility recommendations. Here, we offer the content and approach of this game, so that learners are better able to find alternative content and ways of learning.

Content of modules: The In & Out-O-Meter lets users explore how various foods match up with various physical activities. Its goal is to quantify Energy In, Energy Out with regards to exercise and eating. The user chooses a serving of food and a form of exercise from a drop-down menu; then the animated character “Skippy” dances, cycles, washes the car, jumps on a trampoline, or rests (for example) for an interval of time that represents how much energy would need to be expended to equal the amount of energy taken in.

Approach: The web-based Flash module is controlled by mouse or trackpad. Rather than relying on accuracy and speed, the Eat Move Learn modules focus on subject comprehension. It requires some mouse clicking, including clicking on a dropdown menu.

Approach:

The modules are text- and image-based. They do not include voiceover. However, the website includes songs and slide sets. The modules do not require point-and-click precision, and timing is not important.

Input Devices:

Requires mouse or trackpad, may be accessible for some special equipment replacing trackpad
