"The four articles... were very relevant and informative."
6th Grade Teacher - Arizona
What's the Story? Lesson 2
This lesson is the second of five lessons to be conducted over a
three-week period and will take the full class period. Conduct this
lesson after Lesson 1.
Today, you will:
- Divide class into student groups representing the three different
professions.
- Guide students in reviewing research articles.
- Assist students as they summarize research in PowerPoint
presentations.
Preparation
- Set up computer lab for students to review their resources. Each
group should have access to at least one computer with Internet access.
- Review and familiarize yourself with the three What's The
Story? Group Guides and the resources linked from each.
Make a copy of a guide for each student.
Group Research Activity
Divide students into three groups representing three different
professions: nutritionists, physiologists and anthropologists.
Throughout this Exploration, student groups will take on the roles of
these professionals to make observations and collect and analyze data.
Groups:
- Nutritionists: these students should be most
interested in diet. What does the research and interactives tell us
about what American's eat and how their eating patterns have changed
over the years? What conclusions can students draw about the role of
diet in the American obesity epidemic?
- Physiologists: these students should be most
interested in activity. What role has the American lifestyle changed
over the
past years regarding activity? How role has activity played in the
epidemic?
- Anthropologists: these students should be
interested in the environment and how that affects American's health.
How does the environment affect what American's eat and how they move?
What role has a changing environment played in the epidemic?
- Help your students form into groups.
- Give each group the appropriate What's the Story?
Group Guide. Encourage students to take notes on what
they learn while reviewing research.
- Distribute the PowerPoint templates, Nutritionists, Physiologists, and Anthropologists.
Encourage students to complete the first 4 slides in the template to
summarize their research and
the factors they feel have led to the nationwide epidemic of obesity.
